Just an added tip… if it's white smoke… it means you blew a head gasket and water from the radiator is leaking into the pistons and making steam; if its black smoke… you are burning oil; and if its green smoke, the flux capacitor in your DeLorean is about to blow.

Hi !
Does anybody knows the difference between this smooth technique and the Reverse Motion Tracking used in tut 43 Demon Face Wrap. Doesn´t the Reverse Motion Tracking technique works better, cause you don't have to crop or tile the footage at the end ?
Owen Walters
Reverse tracking does not stabilize footage. Therefore while it does not require cropping it also doesn't do anything to the original footage. It just gives extra data.

it nice but i want to know abut null object. please give me some tips abut null object.
Chris
Hi there, A null object is a placeholder for any information. It can be used for more than just stabilising but the 'Tracker' needs somewhere to store the information to. Plus, with a null object, you can parent objects to it so you can use the track option of the 'tracker' instead of the stabilise option,
Hope this helps.

Does 'Stabilize' have to be enabled before analyzing, or can you change it afterward?
ThePianistop66
Yes, because if you choose another option like track motion, after effects will analyse to track the motion instead of stabilizing (trust me, I've tried it )

This seems to be a problem in after effects. You should go to adobe forums and ask this question to them

Hi Andrew / Josh,

Have you any tips on stabalizing a shot with a big focus pull. i.e. DOP blurs out any points you may want to use for tracking. There are still points for tracking but these blur out half way through the shot when the focus pull happens. Was filmed on handheld DSLR so pretty shaky, but shot has come out nice otherwise.

Great tutorial, but there is a much simpler way to do this, as explained in this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq59Ua8THws . The steps are mostly the same, except insead of copying the anchor point data to a null, the data is copied to the position of the same footage, thus cancelling it out. Then using the smoother on the position data, the video is smoothed out.

This method has no null object, no camera, no 3d, and no expressions, and is much simpler.

But don't get me wrong... video copilot is still the best place to learn after effects!
Josh Kramer
Aye, it's easier, but it isn't if you implement more footage in the same shot. Like this one with the smoke. Now you can just connect the smoke footage to the null object and you got the same camera movement.

Wow, awesome tutorial, but also kind of disheartening too for someone like me who has never really used After Effects but is interested. I have used Photoshop since about version 4.0 so I understand masking etc, but all that linking in stuff really does my head in!

I appreciate the humour you bring to your videos as well.

Hey JC. Trapcode Particular are not two different plug-ins. The plug-in Particular is by Trapcode. Unfortenently you have to pay for those plug-ins. But when you think it worth for you buying it heres the website: http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/trapcode-particular/ Well actually this plug-in is one of the most expensive plug-ins(299 Dollars)

Here's a really dumb question Andrew or to anyone that can help out. Every time i import a video into Adobe After Effects Cs3 Pro there is no volume.

I use a headset at the moment cause my speakers blew out on me but would that have anything to do with it?

I've been playing with music vids in After Effects but i can't get the volume to play on them..

Any help would be great thanks guys!

David, there's sth wrong with my work in this tutorial. I still wonder that Motion Track may depend on Framerate or the color or resolution. Would you mind sending me your AE file, plz !(including the converted video).
David
@metalpigâ€â€Â

I don't think After Effects can properly interpret the footage. I had to open the supplied footage in Final Cut Pro and export the clip again to get the right frame rate. The timeline should be 720p24 HDV (24 really 23.976). You have to have FCP 5.1.4 or higher to have the HDV settings.

This is what I got compared to the original:
http://yourvisualimage.com/test/footage_sidebyside.mov

If you have Premiere Pro, it will actually make the footage 23.980 (rounding up) and AE can see it properly. At least that's what I'm finding online. If you don't have PP, AE messes up the video.

Andrew, we need to move you to Final Cut Pro. I know deep down your Appleness is crying out. You gave me some awesome ideas with this smoke twist you showed. Way to go.

I had this problem with the tracking too. The clip's frame rate is 23.980 and not 23.976. If you don't have Premiere Pro installed on the same machine, AE can't understand the frame rate. If you have Final Cut Pro, you can import it and export it again at 23.076.

Thanks for that Andrew (Sir) You really did Mark Christiansen's technique justice in this tutorial. Its an excellent book and i'm so glad you are letting the community know about! Its great to see the use of Hi Con mattes and roto, and I must tell you that your colorama technique has got me out of the sticky stuff so many times! I hope Mark Christiansen pops by the site sometime and takes a look at the great community you have going here. Andrew (Sir) Mark and Stu are my most influential heroes towards my film making today and all three of your voices are always in my head when im filming and in post, a Big thankyou!

Hey Andrew,

I did some tests with generated footage in FCP with a timecode generator and exported 720p24 timeline to a mov and a photo JPEG and they both work fine in AE CS3. I wonder if there is something strange in the demo footage? Also, when I brought in the 2 samples, they were 23.976 and not 23.98.

Has anyone else had this problem with the demo police car footage?

Thanks,

Sir, I noticed in the beginning when you motion tacked your footage, it tracked very quickly. Are you using footage that has been compressed in order for AE to run this fast?

Whenever I import a self contained QT file from Final Cut, I always have to work at a lower res because the HDV footage I'm working with always takes FOREVER to preview a render or sometimes to even jump around in the time line. Frustrating...

Love the site, love the tutorials, but for me, it would be a compliment if someone said, "Your movie reminds me a lot of the Blair Witch"... if I was going for that. Now if I was shooting a standard film, it wouldn't be good, and would be more like "Hey, your flick is a lot like Bourne Ultimatum", which would be a slap in the face. Good movie, garbage cinematography and editing.

Great job as usual tho!

Man Andrew I need this exact lesson about 3 weeks ago. I made a CG car and need smoke coming off the wheels. I dreaded using 3d smoke effectors due to the large render times for HD compositing.
I turned to particular but I could not control the speed of the particle generation since the car played back at 90 fps and the smoke had to generate super slow.
With one day to brainstorm the effect, I left the car smokeless. It was still an awesome effect yet it could have been even more dynamic.
So in essence I am thanking you for such an awesome tutorial.
Thanks a million once again. I will experiment and add the car with smoke for my reel tape.
Peace out.
Oh btw the car was sliding sideways and then had to turn (all at 90 fps) and when that happened I did not have time to properly track the effect using particular and your null control tutorial about 30 lesson back. I thought of asking for you help but could not contact you on the matter. All is well and have a great day.
